Congratulations to Twilla Haynes

July 20, 2010 by Beth

Twilla Haynes 80N used her passion for health care in one of the world's most struggling nations: Haiti. She was shocked by the poor health of the population and took action by providing health care. She led a hands-on international nursing course and provided basic medical needs and health services. This led to the formation of Eternal Hope in Haiti (EHIH). The main goal of this organization was to better meet the health care and nutritional needs of Haitians. After noticing the mass amounts of poverty-stricken, unhealthy children, Haynes opened Hope Haven, an orphanage for medically fragile children. Not only did this orphanage nurse malnourished children back to health, it provided education, safety, and love. After the 2010 earthquake, Haynes' organization was tapped to partner with the Haitian community to coordinate the services of thousands of earthquake victims in the second largest city in Haiti, Cap-Haitian. Haynes' passion for nursing was not limited to Haiti. She offered nursing training to Emory students in international settings since 1990 and also guided them domestically since 1998. She currently works with the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing. She has provided care for the migrant farm workers in Moultrie, GA and is an advocate for bettering minority education efforts. Haynes also serves on the Nurses' Alumni Association (NAA) and is an active member of the nursing honor society; Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Epsilon chapter. In 1996, Haynes also opened a clinic in Georgia for uninsured people, collaborated with state and federal agencies to better Georgia's health care systems, taught at several universities where she earned "Teacher of the Year," and volunteered with several nursing professional organizations.

The Emory Medal is the highest honor awarded to alumni. Congratulations Twilla and thank you for your lifetime of commitment to your profession and the people you serve.
