Earthquake Relief Team Blog #2: Travel Mercies and Confirmation
March 2, 2010 by Beth
God continues to have His hand on our mission trip. Travel mercies started early this morning with Delta Airlines playing a key part. Susie put her suitcase on the scales and it weighed in at a whopping 71 lbs. We were informed the 21 lb. overage would result in a $300 charge, which was immediately waived when the Delta Airlines agent learned the suitcase was partially packed with medical supplies heading to Haiti. Delta Airlines rolled out the red carpet for Twilla and gang as well upon learning of the purpose of this mission trip.
The travel went very smoothly with boarding in Atlanta at just before 10 AM, landing in the Turks and Caicos just before 1 PM, and the Lord’s provision of a charter plane that took off from Turks and Caicos at 5 PM for the hour plus flight to Cap Haitien. The welcome at the Cap Haitien airport included two trucks waiting for the team, making the final leg of the trip the smoothest ever.
The hustle and bustle of Cap Haitien was at a higher level than normal, and it is estimated that 150,000 have migrated from Port-au-Prince to Cap Haitien since the earthquake. Today, the banks opened for the first time since the earthquake, but the schools are still closed. One person from Cap Hatien explained the situation in Cap Haitien by saying “everything in Haiti depends on Port-au-Prince”.
Once at the beautiful Mont Joli Hotel, the team was able to secure the last two available rooms for the women on the trip, and the men on the trip are staying at Patrick’s brother’s house. The lobby of the Mont Joli was bustling with well over 50 people, mostly relief workers from USA.
Our hearts are grateful to God for the travel mercies and many confirmations of this trip that each team member experienced over the last several days. And the team members are also grateful for the supporters of EHIH, whose love and prayers are a large part of this mission trip. May God bless our work as we begin the mission trip in earnest tomorrow!
