Earthquake Relief Team Blog #8: 11-month old Brought to Hope Haven Orphanage!

April 29, 2010 by Hannah McLear

Hope Haven received the first earthquake victim on Thursday. Nana, originally thought to be an 11-month old, but more likely a two-year old or three-year old girl, who lost her mother in the earthquake. A neighbor in Port-au-Prince brought this baby and her 16 year old sister to Cap Haitien, and their first stop was the gym where the EHIH relief team is. Nana’s future changed dramatically for the better today thanks to the encounter with the EHIH relief team and thanks to the years of love and support poured into Hope Haven by so many people that makes it the special place it is today. Against this happy news is sad news that one of the two babies in the hospital mentioned in Blog #6 passed away. The paper work for the other baby needed to bring the baby to Hope Haven was held up on Thursday but is expected to be complete in the coming days. The EHIH relief team continued their incredible work on Thursday. The cases seem to be getting more severe with worse infections, wounds, and starvation. Some positive news to counter this growing severity is the work the US Army Special Forces have done with bringing more supplies to the EHIH relief team. According to the relief team, they have been true heroes in these efforts. As the EHIH relief team is nearing their scheduled trip home on Saturday, plans are underway with the local Haitian officials and leaders from the relief agencies to continue this amazing work past this week. One likelihood is for Dr. Rizor, who came back to Atlanta today for National Guard duty, to return next week and continue his work. Other members of the team are strongly considering extending their stay to ensure continuity. And it is possible that other medical professionals associated with EHIH will be joining these efforts next week. Please pray for these plans so that the well established and effective triage unit led by the EHIH relief team can continue past this Saturday. And praise God for the great work He has accomplished through the talents and efforts of the EHIH relief team.
